intelligencefactorg,GcandGf,theyareincludedinthedomainofgeneralabilities.
Thedistinguishingaspectofthismodelisthatitnotonlyincludesthemultiplicityof
cognitivefactors,butalsothatitcontainsnon-cognitivefactors.AsCarrollstates,"The
firstnineofthesegroupsareregardedasrepresentingtruecognitiveabilitiesinthesense
ofbeingrelativelyfixed,long-termattributesofindividualsrespectingthekindsofcog-
nitivetaskstheycanandcannotperformwithvaryingdegreesofsuccess,ataparticular
stageofdevelopment”(1993,p.137).Othergroupsincludepersonalitycharacteristics:
interpersonalbehaviour,interestandmotivationfactors,personalityandaffectivefac-
tors,andsocialfactorstermedaseducational&socialstatusbackgroundfactors.Itmay
comeasasurprisethatknowledgeisalsopresentinthetaxonomyrepresentedintwo
domains:factorspertainingtoknowledgeofdifferentsubject-mattersandfactorsper-
tainingtoschoolachievement.Tosumup,wemaysaythatCarroll’smodel,whichisin
somerespectssimilartoSternberg’s(1997)model,constitutesprobablythemostcom-
plex,multileveledandmultifactorparadigmofhumanabilities.
Inthedomainoflanguage,whichwasofspecialinteresttoCarroll,367minorfactors
arerecognisedandsubsumedunderfivehigher-orderfactors:verbalcomprehension,
languagedevelopment,spellingability,phoneticcodingandvocabulary.Carrollconsid-
ersthesefactorsessentialinthedomainoflanguage;however,hismodeloflanguage
aptitudeconsiderablyexceedsthelanguagedomainbecauseitincludesthereasoning
abilityandmemory.Asheargues,"Thelinebetweenthisdomainandmanyothers,such
asthatofreasoning,isdifficulttodraw.Manyfactorsappeartodependonbothlan-
guageabilitiesandotherabilities,suchasreasoningandmemory”(1993,p.145).His
famousmodelofFLaptitude(1959)
3embracesfourfactors:grammaticalsensitivity,
phoneticcoding,inductivereasoningandassociativememory,ofwhichonlythefirst
twobelongtothelanguagedomainandarereferredtoasprimary-orderfactors.
TwogroupsoffactorsinthedomainoflanguagearedistinguishedbyCarrollasthe
mostsignificant:languagedevelopmentandverbalcomprehension.Thelanguagede-
velopmentfactorisdefinedasreflectinggeneraldevelopmentinspokennativelanguage
skills.Itisbynomeansaunitarytraititcontainsdifferentcomponentsandisdominat-
edbyathird-ordergeneralintelligencefactor.Therefore,languagedevelopment,accord-
ingtoCarroll,isaccompaniedbythedevelopmentofothercognitiveabilitiesanditis
likelythattherearedifferenttrajectoriesoflanguagedevelopmentthatstartatavery
earlyage.Itismeasuredbynative-languagevocabularytests,aswellasinformation
(knowledge)tests,forexample,theWechslerIntelligenceScale(Wechsler,1997).Ana-
