Thisethnography,combiningclassicalreflectionsonthehistoryofhisto-
riography,themethodologyofhistoryandculturalanthropology,isthe
fruitoftheiranthropologisationbasedonGeertz)sculture.Itisoneof
themanymixedgenresinwhichmodernhumanitiesabound.
Whilepointingtothespecificityoftheethnographyofhistorical
thoughtagainstthebackgroundofcontemporaryhistoriographicand
methodologicalresearch,Iwanttobrieflyrefertothepotentialcritique
inthelightofthediscussiononthechallengesthatthereflectionon
thepastallegedlyfaces.Writingaboutnon-anthropocentrichumanities,
EwaDomańskapointstoaparadigmaticgapandthedifficultiesinpre-
sentingsatisfactoryexplanationsofthecomingrealitybycontemporary
humanities.Shepointstotheinterpretative-constructivistparadigmas
ineffective.6
Undoubtedly,theethnographyofhistoricalthoughtispartofthe
interpretative-constructivistparadigm.Thebasicobjectionconcerning
thetextualisationofrealitywithinitsframeworkisaccurate,butnotin
thecaseofGeertz)santhropology.7Ibelievethatwhendelvingintothe
processesofunderstanding,asperceivedininterpretativeanthropology,
aworld(orratherworlds)doesnotdisappear,butisbroughttolight.8
Thewaycultureisunderstoodininterpretiveanthropology,inspiredby
thetraditionofpragmatism,indicatesthatmeaningaspartoftheobjec-
tiveworldisnotofatextualnature.
