1.1.3.MATERIAL

ThepublicLariboisièreFernand-WidalHospital(AP-HP)inPariswaschosen.Itis

quitespeciﬁcforourpurposebecauseitissituatedinanareawherealargepartofthe

populationisunderprivileged.Sotheprobabilityofmeetingthispopulationishigh.

Thishospitalisapublicteachinghospitalwithdepartmentsinmedicine,surgeryand

obstetricswhichcovermorethanhalfofthestays.

Thequestionnaireonsocialdisabilitywasconductedbetween8and23Novem-

ber2005foradmissionsbetween7and22November.French,EnglishorMandarin

speakers,uncooperative(withorwithoutagivenreason)orunhealthypatients,

peopledischargedatthetimeoftheintervieworwhodidnotreturnthequestion-

naireorwhoseformswereincomplete,wereretained.Patientsingeriatrics,follow-

upcare,rehabilitationandpsychiatrywereexcludedduetotheslowturnoverand

thoseinophthalmologyandcardiologyaswellduetothequickturnover(lessthan

24hours).

Thesizeofthesamplewascalculatedbyhospitalactivitydatatodistinguish

thedifferenceinresourceconsumptionbetweendeprivedandnondeprivedpatients.

TheresultswereobtainedusingEpiInfo6.0software.Thenumberofpatientstobe

includedis480,assumingapriorithatdeprivedpatientsrepresent20%ofthehos-

pitalpopulation.Therecruitmentperiodadopteddependedonthehospitalactivity

between2002and2004.Thepresentstudywasconductedduringoneofthemonths

identiﬁedashavinganactivitycorrespondingtotheannualaverage.

Thesocialdisabilityquestionnairewasadministeredtoeachpatientuponadmis-

sion(theﬁrstdayorthedayafterinthecaseofaninterventionorafterintensive

care).Itwasgenerallyﬁlledoutbythepatient,althoughoccasionallybytheinter-

viewerhelpingapatienttoosickorbyprovidinghimwithsomeexplanationincase

ofnocomprehension.

1.1.4.STATISTICALANALYSIS

Thevariablesconstitutingindicatorswerevalidatedonthebasisofafactoranalysis

ofcorrespondencesledbythestatisticiansofINSEE.31,32

Theydiditforeachindicatorconsistingofanumberofvariables.Eachvariableis

independentofothers.Correlationbetweentwovariablesislowevennull.Thatcan

beveriﬁedinoursamplebycomputingcorrelationmatrixbetweeneachindicator.As

wegot14indicators,inordertoclarifyandsimplifytheresultspresentation,wegive

onlycorrelationmatrixresultsforthesixareas.
