andthetreasurer(inPolish:skarbnik,skarbek)–
aghostofamine.Thesestoriesareeagerlylistenedto
andreadbychildrenandadultsalike.Initially,they
werepresentonlyinfolklore,butovertimetheybe-
cameanimportantelementofUpperSilesianculture
andidentity.Thepopularphraseoftenrepeatedtomis-
chievouschildreninUpperSilesia,“Boprzyjdziebebok
icięzje!”(Bogeymanwillcomeandeatyou!)isamani-
festationofthepresenceofelementsfromSilesianfairy
talesandlegendsinthegeneralconsciousness.
