andwasconcernedwithmethodsofpresentationofphotographsinmuseums.
ParticipantsinthismeetingincludedLuciaAlmášiová,representingtheSlovak
NationalGalleryinBratislava,andKatalinBognár,curatorofthedepartmentof
photographyintheHungarianNationalMuseuminBudapest.Thefirstofthese
authorsundertakesthesubjectofSlovaksocialphotography,fromtheinterwar
periodtothe1970s.Almášiováconciselysurveystheachievementofthemostim-
portantSlovakphotographersoccupiedwithsocialquestions,anddrawsparticular
attentiontothesignifiantroleofL’udovitHlaváčinthefieldofpropagandaand
thecollectingofthiskindofphotograph,aswellasitsinfluenceonthestyleof
discourseregardingsuchphotographs,togetherwiththeconcomitantquestionof
theirpresentationtothepublicinexhibitions.
KatalinBognárpresentstheprocessoftheincorporationintothemuseumof
photographsdepictingworkers,datingfromtheinterwarperiod.Sheemphasises
thefactthatthephotographswhichwerethesubjectofheranalysiswereinitially
valuedchieflyfortheirsubjectandtheirrepresentationalfunction,andboththe
identityofthephotographerandtheartisticvaluesofthephotographwereover-
shadowed,oftentotheextentthat,formanyphotographscurrentlyinthecollec-
tionsoftheMuseumoftheHungarianLabourMovement(MagyarMunkásmozgal-
miMúzeum),ithasnotbeenpossibletoestablishthenamesoftheirauthorsor
thecircumstancesinwhichtheywerecreated.Theauthoralsodiscussesimportant
Hungarianexhibitionsdevotedtophotographyonsocialthemes.
ElliLeventakiexaminesmethodsofutilisingphotographsinmuseumscom-
memoratinggreathumantragedies.Shejuxtaposesthenarrationproposedbythe
NewYorkmuseumdevotedtotheeventsof11thSeptember2001withthedisplay
intheMuseumofMemoryandHumanRightsinSantiagodeChile.Leventakidraws
attentiontothedifferingwayinwhichportraitsofvictimsaretreatedinboth
locations,anddescribesthespaceinwhichthesephotographsaresituated.She
emphasisestheinseparablelinkthatisforgedbetweenaphotographandhuman
memory,andidentifiesthisasafundamentalfactorintheconstructionofdisplays
andexhibitionsdevotedtodifficulteventsinthehistoryoflargesocietiesoreven
entirenations.
LouisBouletisinterestedinproblemsofthemutualinteractionbetweenthe
museumspaceandtheobjectswhicharepresentedwithinit.Asthesubjectofhis
researchhechosetheWhiteCubegalleryanditsexhibitionsofphotographyon
socialthemes,withadistinctlyleft-wingemphasis.

phyandthemuseumspace,althoughherviewpointcanbedescribedasmeta-the-
