Summary
Oneofthemostsignificantconsequencesofdemographicchangeistheincreasein
theproportionofolderpeople,andinparticularasurgeinthepopulationoftheoldest
adults.Thechangesintheagestructureofthepopulationresultinanumberofsocio-
economicchallenges.Intermsofelderlycare,thedoubleageingprocesshasledtoin-
creaseddemandonvariousformsofassistance.Thesupportsystemisprimarilybased
oninformalfamilysupportnetworks.However,withtheprogressingfamilyatomisation
andverticalisationofthefamilynetwork,thepotentialnumberofcaregiversisdwin-
dlingwhilethenumberofseniorcitizensrequiringassistancewiththeirdailyroutineis
quicklyexpanding.Duetothechangingfamilystructureandfunctions,theelderlyre-
quirethesupportofnon-governmentalorganisations,religiouscommunitiesorpublicin-
stitutions.Currently,institutionalassistanceresponsibilitiesaresharedbytwosectors:
thehealthcaresectorandthesocialwelfaresector.Thefirsthalfofthe21
stcenturyis
likelytoseethedevelopmentofvarioustypesofinstitutionalassistancewithinthesesec-
tors.Themaindeterminantsoftheuseofinstitutionalassistance,apartfrompoorhealth
andlossofindependence,aretheincomeandfamilystatusofthesenior,aswellasthe
sizeofhisorherinformalnon-familysupportnetwork.Thesubjectmatterofthispres-
entationistheinfluenceofsocialanddemographicfactorsonthedevelopmentofinstitu-
tionalassistanceinPoland.Theobjectiveofthispresentationistodiscusstheproblems
facedbytheelderlycaresystemandtheconsequencesofthechangeintheagestructure
ofthepopulationforinstitutionalassistanceinPoland.
