ofconservationofhistoricmonumentstraditionallyunderstood,
basedonthecanonsoftheVeniceCharterof1964andusingmodern
technology,continuedalongtheroadofprogressivespecialization
andisolationofthediscipline,availabletoKinsiders”.Whereas,
conservationofhistoriccities,afieldfromthebeginningdefiant
towardsconservationdoctrines,asevidencedbytherebuildingfrom
thedevastationofthewarand,withtime,increasinglydistinguished

analysisofurbanprocesses,andintegratingvariousstudiesinthe
humanitiesrelatedtothecity,choseanotherdirectionsearching

Thisapproachcametogetherwiththeawarenessthatconservationof
historiccities,beingaplanningproblem,thoughreachingfarintothe
past,shouldbeviewedasalivingmatterofthepresent,firmlyrooted
incurrentrealityofplaceandsocialneeds.
Today,asweknow,inmanycitiesaroundtheworld,itissocial
needswhich,throughcivicmovements,decideabouthowurbanspace
isusedandthedestinyofheritage,aspeoplecreateforthemselves
analternativeurbanlife,lessalienated,morejoyfulandopentothe
needsofothers.Reactingtothecrisisofurbaninstitutions,theyalso
searchforinformationaboutKtheirplaceonearth”,tolearnaboutit
andactresponsibly.Inthiscontext,wecan,betterthaneverbefore,
comprehendthedilemasofthosewho,inthebeginningofthe
twentiethcentury,createdtheEuropeanphilosophyofconservation
ofhistoricmonuments.
