WhenanalysedfromtheperspectiveofstudiesconductedbytheInsti-
tuteofCatholicChurchStatistics,onemayseethatthelasttwodec-
adeswitnessedanewdirectionofchangesafectingbothPolishsociety’s
mentality
,aswellasdeclaredvalueorientations.Thesetransformations
arerepresentedbyattitudestowardshavingchildrenandfamily
.Thesig-
nificanceofthesebeliefsiscurrentlyexposedtotheriskofbreakdown,
which,inturn,resultsinvisiblescufsonthetraditionalPolishculture.
Thesenewchangesarerepresentedmostlybyyoung,well-educatedpro-
fessionalswholiveinbigurbandistricts.42Theseindividualsarerespon-
sibleforforgingnewvalueorientationsthatwillindicateafateofPolish
cultureinthefuture.AsMariańskiputsit:“adolescents’andadults’pro-
familyawarenessismarkedbyaneclecticcombinationoftheCatholic
andsecularvaluesystems.”43
Manycontemporarycountriesarebasedmoreonindividualsthan
families.Itispostulatedthatindividualsaremoremobile,adaptiveand
responsivetonewbehaviouralpatterns.Theycanbealsomanipulated
inamuchmoreconvenientway
.Undersuchcircumstances,thestatusof
familiesbecomesdiminished,andtheirproblemsareperceivedasprivate
dilemmaswhichthestatedoesnothavetotakecareof.Nowadays,the
aforementionedmodeloffamilytransformsverydynamicallyinPoland.
Adolescentsaremostlyinterestedinbecomingindependent,butnotfor
thesakeofhavingtheirownfamilies.Beingindependent,self-reliant,
havingaregulareconomicstatusarefirst-rateneedsthat,whenfulfilled,
arehardtoberejectedfreely
.Asaresult,alternativeformsofmarriage
andfamilyarebecomingmorepopular.Families,inturn,aresubsumed
withinthesphereofpoliticaleconomyinwhichtheyaresubjectedto
tensionsimplicitinit.Socialization,amongotherobjectives,aims“to
prepareindividualstoexistinastandardized,fragmentizedandinconsist-
entworld.Ontheotherhand,familiesfacepostulatesreferringtoindivid-
ual,personalized<persons.’Aswecansee,thefamilyhasbeenentrapped,
sinceitisaspheredividedbetweentwoincompatiblegrammarsofself.
Byshapingautonomousandself-reliantindividuals,thefamilywillfail
becausetheseindividualswouldnotbeabletocopewithexpectationsof
organizedsociety
.Beingauthenticintermsofidentityistantamountto
beingmaladaptive.Conversely
,byshapingindividualswhofitintolarge
socialorganizations,thefamilyisdoomedtocreateneuroticswhoseuse-
fulnessislimitedtothevirtueofadaptation.Thesepeople,whenbeing
