Anotherviewofeducationtakesaconflictperspectiveandconsidershoweducation,
ofitsnature,reinforcesinequalitiesinsociety:thereby,classandgenderintheeducation
systemareconsideredinrelationtogenderstereotyping,teachers’expectationsandstu-
dents’motivation,engagementorsuccess(Walker&Barton,2013).
Anotherviewtakesasymbolicinteractionistperspectiveandfocusesonsocialin-
teractioninclassroomandschoolsettings.Social‘typing’orlabellingcanoccurboth
inphysical,aswellas,onlineeducationalsettingsandcanhavedeepandwide-ranging
consequences(Hargreaves,HesterandMellor,2011).
Teauthortakesthesevariedfunctionsintoaconsiderationofwaysthateducation
canbuildmulticulturalismandinclusivityinsociety.Anincreaseinthesevaluesisespe-
ciallyimportant,inthesetimesofcontinuedcrisis,asmulticulturalismandinclusivityin
educationcaneńectpositivesocietaleńects,includinggreaterequality,increasedsocial
justice,inclusionanddiversity,aswellaspersonalefcacyandlearningfordemocracy.
Suchamultiplicityofeńectsshowsthattherelationshipbetweensociologyofeducation,
educationandmulticulturalismiscomplexandmulti-layeredandmakesfurtherstudies
inthisfieldofevengreatimportanceinthecurrenttimesofcrisis,whichisexaminedin
thenextsection.
2.WHYISTHESOCIOLOGYOFEDUCATIONAKEY
FIELDTOCONSIDERNOW?
Itisimportanttoconsidersucheńectsofeducationinthecontextofthecurrent
timesofcrisis,bothintermsoftheon-goingplanetarypandemicbutalsolookingback
overthelastdecadeorsoatglobalcrisesthathaveańectededucation.Inthelastdecade
orso,theworldhashadaperiodofgreatsocialturbulence;whethertheeconomiccrisis
(beginningin2008),ortheEuropeanmigrantcrisisthroughthelastdecade,ornow,
withtheon-goingCOVID-19globalpandemic.Eachsucceedingcrisishasbroughtits
owndifcultiesandnegativeeńectsandinreviewingthisperiodofcrises,itiseasytofo-
cusonthenegativesandconsiderthatsocietyisfacingunprecedentedchallengeswhich
arehavingamassivenegativeimpact,onalllevelsandaspectsofsocietyand,inturn,
education.Andindeed,thatisthecaseandshouldberecognised.
However,therearealsowaysthat,inaperiodofsuchchangeandperhaps,especial-
lyinsuchaperiodofcrises,thereisevengreatercapacitytomakepositiveimpactsin
addressingthesechallenges.Inaunionoftheoryandpractice,somerecentcasestudies
wheremultidisciplinarycollaborationandasharedapproachhasbroughtpositiveout-
comesareconsideredinthenextsection.
CaseStudy1:AcademicScholarship
