Tebeliefthateducationforsustainabledevelopmentisnecessaryappeared
withemergenceofthecategoryofsustainabledevelopmentininternationaland
nationalpolitics,i.e.inthe60softhe20
th
century.Teunderstandingofthe
conceptand,hence,educationforsustainabledevelopmenthaveevolvedover
theyears,whichwasreflectedindrawingupdocumentsandlegalacts(Piontek,
2002).
Tedefinitionofsustainabledevelopmentproposedin1987intheReport
oftheWorldCommissiononEnvironmentandDevelopmentisstillcommonly
used.Accordingtothedefinition,sustainabledevelopmentisaprocessdesigned
tofulfilthedevelopmentaspirationsofthecurrentgenerationwithoutcompro-
misingtheabilityoffuturegenerationstoachievethesameneeds.Tefunda-
mentalprincipleofthedevelopmentissuchmanagementofnaturalresources
toensuresustainedrenewaloftheenvironment.Tisprinciplewasincluded
inAgenda21adoptedbytheUNOin1992duringtheEarthSummitinRio
deJaneiro(FinalDocumentsoftheUnitedNationsConference“Environmentand
