Asanactiveperformer,Ihavefacedcriticismfromteachersandfellowartists
concerningmyproductionofKharsh”sounds,myliberalapproachtotempi,and
myextensiveuseofrubatoduringmyperformancesofSzymanowski’sMazurkas.
Thiscriticismarosefromthemistakenbeliefthathiscompositionsshouldbe
approachedinthesamewayasChopin’sMazurkas.Thislackofknowledgeabout
Góralculture,andinparticularitsmusicandcharacter,becamemymotivation
forchoosingthesubjectofthisdissertation.Itisintendedasareminderthat
KarolSzymanowski’sMazurkaswerepredominantlyinspiredbyPodhalefolk
music,thatthecompositionsareacollectionofvariousdancesinagreatvariety
oftempi,andthatsubsequentlytheirinterpretationshouldreflecttheharshand
drivensoundsthatarefoundattherootsofHighlandGóralmusic.
