Thisbookisaddressedtothosewhowishtoexpressthemselvesin
academicEnglishforwhateverreason-whethertoproduceahomework
assignment,toprepareascientificarticle,towriteadissertation,orto
deliverapaperataconference-andaimstoservetheneedsofstudents
aswellasofthosewhoareprofessionallyengagedinresearch.Itisalso
intendedasateachingaid;anumberofsections(inparticularPartsTwo
andThree)presupposeateacherwhowillfullyexplaintheuseofthe
itemslistedthere:theneedtokeepthebookwithinmanageablepropor-
tionsprecludesamoredetailedpresentation.
Obviously,asthebookisintendedforanaudiencerangingfrom
studentsandteacherstoresearchers,itmustbeusedselectively.Thus
PartI.3(EETheFirstPerson’’)willbeonlyofverylimiteduseforanyone
writingatypicalundergraduateessay,whereasothersectionswilldoubt-
lessstrikeanyonewithexperienceinwritingforaspecialistaudienceas
beingself-evident.Anumberofsections,aboveallthosegrouped
togetherinPartThree,havebeenincludedforpurposesofreference.
Anattempthasbeenmadetosetespeciallysignificantwordsand
phrasesintheirpropercontext,1oftenbymeansofcompletesentences.
Thebookmakesnoclaimtoexhaustivenessinitsdescriptionofaca-
demicEnglish,notleastbecausetherespectivedisciplinesandbranches
ofsciencehaveevolvedverydistinctivetraditions:thesheervolumeof
researchbeingcarriedonaroundtheworldvirtuallyprecludesthe
possibilityofacomprehensiveoverview.2
Thebookisdevotedtothelanguageandidiomofacademicwriting.It
isnotconcernedwiththeformalconventionsofacademicpublishing,
