Youhavecertainlynoticedthatyourcomputermonitorgetsdustyquicker
thanotherfurnitureinyourroom.Thisisbecauseelectricchargebuildsuponit
andattractstheparticlesofdust.Butwhyisunchargeddustattractedtothe
chargedmonitor?Well,whenweusethecomputer,extraelectronsonthe
surfacebuildup.Thentheseelectronsmaketheelectronsintheparticlesofdust
moveawaybecauselikechargesrepel.Asaresulttherearemorepositive
chargesinthedustparticlesclosetothemonitorandasoppositechargesattract,
thedustisattractedtothemonitor.

Chargeswhich‘appear’ontheparticlesofdustarecalledinducedcharges
andtheprocessiscalledelectrostaticinduction.Gold-leafelectroscopeisan
instrumentfordetectingcharge.Itsprincipleofoperationisbasedonthe
phenomenonofelectrostaticinduction.Thisinstrumenthasagold-leafwhich,if
theinstrumentischarged,movesawayfromthecentralroditisattachedto.The
instrumentischargedbyinduction,whichmeans‘atadistance’thatiswhenthe
chargedbodydoesnottouchtheinstrumentbutonlyisputcloselytoit.
