TheIHOdefnitionofHydrographystandsasfollows:
Thebranchofappliedscienceswhichdealswiththemeasurementanddescription
ofthefeaturesoftheseasandcoastalareasfortheprimarypurposeofnaviga-
tionandallothermarinepurposesandactivities,including–interalia–offshore
activities,research,protectionoftheenvironment,andpredictionservices[1]*.
Therefore,thedevelopmentofaNationalMaritimePolicyrequiresawellde-
velopedcapabilitytoconductalltheseactivitieswhichwillallowtheobtain-
ingofbasicknowledgeofthegeographical,geologicalandgeophysical
featuresoftheseabedandcoast,aswellthecurrents,tidesandcertainphysical
propertiesoftheseawater.Allofthisdatamustthenbeproperlyprocessedso
thatthenatureoftheseabottom,itsgeographicalrelationshipwiththeland
andthecharacteristicsanddynamicsoftheoceancanbeaccuratelydepicted
inallzonesofnationalshipping.Inbrief,Hydrography,asdefned,isthekey
toprogressonallmaritimeactivities,normallyofgreatnationaleconomic
importance.
