1,therewasamarkedimprovementin2000duetoaflowofUN
foodaidinconnectionwiththedroughtdisasterwhichalected
thewholearea.Inthefollowingyears,thesituationdeteriorated
steadilytoreachalmostcatastrophicdimensionsthisyear.Chart3

presentsdatafortheSouthCornerDistrict,oneofthepoorest
inthecountry.In2000,undernourishmentalected40percent
ofthepopulationwhilemalnutrition50percent.Bothfigures
wentupin2001.However,inthefollowingyearstheformerhas
increasedslowlybutsteadilytoreachthepeakvalueof55percent
