turalentity’.Thestudyoftheroleofnations,countries,andculturesand
therelationshipsbetweenorganizations,institutions,andcorporationsis
regularlyconsideredasasubjectmatterforpoliticalsciencethatisbest
characterizedbyitsgreatinterestinanalyzing4internationalrelations’
policieswithregardtocross-culturalandtransatlanticperspectives.
Apartfromthis,wewouldliketodrawattentiontovariousotherfields
ofpracticeandresearch,e.g.,economicdevelopments,international
workrelations,societalimplicationsofecologicalsustainabilitypoli-
cies,popularcultureandmediastudies,historicanalyses,and,last
butnotleast,thesocio-culturalaspectsofregionalistmovementsand
secularizationprocessesinEurope.Allinall,thisvolumepresentsmore
ofanholisticapproachwithbothaglobalandaregionalfocusthan
acompletestorywithallpossiblefacets.
AnOutlineofthePresentVolume
ThesharedinterestinunderstandingEuropeandAmericaasembedded
inatransatlanticrelationshipconstitutesthecommongroundforallof
thecontributionstothepresentvolume.Whiletheauthorsapproach
andexplorethisrelationship(aswellastheEuropeanandAmerican
self-interpretations)fromdifferentperspectivesandtowardsdifferent
outcomes–dependingonthecontentareas,researchperspectives,and
regionalandculturalfocus–severalcoexistingthemesandreoccurring
topicscanbeidentifiedthatprovideevidenceforcurrenttrendsand
developmentsinthelargerfieldoftransatlanticstudiesandinternational
relations.Thesedifferentanglesandthevolume’scoverageareillustra-
tedinTable1.
Thetopsectionofthetablepresentsvariousareasofresearchin
transatlanticrelationsstudies.Ascanbeseen,mostofthetopicsare
consideredinmorethanonechapter.Issuesininternationalrelations
andidentityformationareofparamountimportanceinthisfieldof
research.Themiddlesectiongivesanoverviewintermsofresearch
