whicharebiasedbystereotypical(pre-)conceptionsandperceptions,
self-conceptsandconceptsofothers,influenceinteractionprocesses
inspecificworkingenvironmentsandcontexts,andprovidedifferent
opportunitiesforculturaladaptionandadjustment.
Basedonaheterogeneoussampleofstudies,thethirdsectionof
thisvolumecontainsfouressaysthatfocusonthesocial,cultural,and
religiousdevelopmentsandchangesinEuropethatareshapedbyrecent
internationalgeopoliticalshiftsandare,inthisrespect,particularly
relevanttoculturalandinternationalrelationsstudies.InPrzemysław
Łukasik’sessay,acriticalattitudetoGerman-Americanrelations
isreconstructedonthebasisofanhistoricalanalysisoftheGerman
antidemocratic4anti-Americanism’inpublicopinionpolls,political
discourses,andvisualmedia(e.g.,caricatures)fromthe18thCentury
totoday.Unlikecriticismwhichstillleavesroomfordebateordialog,
anti-Americanismcanbeunderstoodasareactiononastereotypicaland
prejudicialleveltothe4supreme’social,economic,andpoliticalinstitu-
tions,tradition,andvaluesystemoftheU.S.nationstate.Whatwecan
learnfromthisanalysisisthatananti-Americanattitudehasbeenpre-
valentinpublicdiscoursesbetweenGermanyandtheU.S.overalmost
twohundredyears.Besidesothers,theauthorsuggeststhattoday’s
anti-Americanismdoesnotprimarilyfocusanymoreonacritiqueof
capitalism,butalsoreferstobothaunitedGermannationalidentityand
itsintegrationinthesystemoftheEuropeanUnion.Inaddition,Martin
Glogerapproachesthecommon4capitalistspirit’,notsomuchfrom
asociologicalandeconomicperspectivebutfromanarratologicalpoint
ofview,identifyingfundamentaldifferencesbetweenNorthAmerican
societiesandEuropeanimaginationsandrepresentationsinpopular
filmculture.Indoingso,heseekstoanswerthequestionastohow
thelatefinancialandcapitalistcrisishasemerged,beencommunicated,
andportrayedinGermanandAmericancoming-of-age-cinema,e.g.,
GenerationXmovies.Thus,Gloger’scomparativeperspectiveisnot
directedatculturaldifferencesonthegovernmentalorsocietallevelas
presentedintheotheressaysbuttolifestoriesandcopingstrategies.On
