Asitistheobjectiveofthispapertoshowtherelationshipbetween
GermaniaandSamasGermanyandAmericarespectively,wetake
fromShakespeare’smostfamousplayssevenpicturesquecharacters,
eachrepresentinganimageofloveandhateinshort:international
andtransatlanticrelationsthatweafterwardsinterpretfromtheper-
spectivesofhistoryaswellasfromsocialandculturalsciences:the
BirthofMacduffastheinventionofAmerica,thePassionatePilgrim
andimmigrantstoAmerica,theTwoNobleKinsmenandgoodrela-
tionsinculturalexchanges,ShylockandAarontheMoorrepresenting
anti-Americanismandracism,Macbethwiththedreamofpower,The
PhoenixandtheTurtleasthefearoflosingone’sownvalues,and
Hamlet’sreflectionsandtheself-assuranceofFortinbras.Thisinter-
pretative,comparativeanalysisasamethodicalandsystematicway
ofthinkinginvolvesthreedifferentlevelsofinterpretationforeach
image.BasedonpassagesfromShakespeare’stexts,adescription
andparaphrasewillbeelaboratedonsomeimportantfactsintheplot
andonthemaincharacters(atthelevelofreformulatingtheimage).
Thereafter,wewillsummarizeinahypothesiswhatweregardasthe
mainpointofthestory(atthelevelofthemeaningoftheimage).
Andfinally,thesemeanings,ofthemannersofShakespeare’srecep-
tion,andthelanguagegamesareinterpretedtoprovidehistoricaland
socio-culturalsubstantiation(levelofreflectiveinterpretationofGer-
man-Americanrelations).4
