mainlyGermandoctoralandpostdoctoralresearcherswhichtookplace
attheInstituteforAdvancedStudyintheHumanities(KWI)inEssen,
Germany,onFebruary10th2011.Secondly,atthesymposium“Trans-
atlanticImagesandRealities:American-GermanRelationsConference”
heldattheGoetheInstitutinCracow,Poland,onMarch25th2011,
otheryoungscholarsfromPolishuniversities,suchastheJagiellonian
UniversityinCracowandtheUniversityofWarsaw,hadtheopportunity
toparticipateinsomeparticularlyvibrantpresentationsanddiscussions.
Thesetwoexcellentacademicvenuesprovidedanextraordinarilyfertile
basisandidealsurroundingsfortrans-andinterdisciplinaryresearchin
thefieldofhumanities,social,andculturalstudieswhichcanbeseen
inthisvolume.Thirdly,welatermadeanadditionalcallforexcellent
papersinordertobroadenourhorizonofinternationalandregional
studiestobeincludedinthisvolume.Notonlyhavewebeengranted
generousfinancialsupportfrombothinstitutionsfortheacademiccon-
ferencesandforthisvolumebutwehavealsobenefitedgreatlyfromthe
uniqueopportunitytobepartofthe“ScholarsinResidence”program
ofbothinstitutionsintheacademicyear2010/2011.Thisresidencepro-
gramisajointinitiativebetweentheGoethe-InstitutandtheInstitute
forAdvancedStudyintheHumanitiesinEssenandpromotesacademic
exchangeintheformofvisitingfellowshipsforresearchersfromGer-
manyandabroad.
