therehavebeenfoundremarkablespectroscopicfeaturesofpolarsolutions
whichobtainedthecommonnameoftheRed-Edgeeffects.Thesenew
achievementshavefoundextensiveapplicationsinchemistryandphysicsof
liquidstate,biophysicsandbiophotonics.Selectivespectroscopyoccupies
veryimportantplaceinstudyofmolecularsystemsespeciallyonescharac-
terizingbyheterogeneitiesoftheirspectraassuggestsstudyingpropertiesof
individualgroupsoffluorescentcenterswiththeaimtofindoutdetailfea-
turesofmembersoflargespectroscopicinhomogeneousensemble.Hence,
suchapproachbenefitsnewopportunitiesessentiallyenlargementinforma-
tivenessofspectroscopyofcomplexmoleculeswithbroadenedelectronic
spectra.Thismethodiscompetitivewithrelativelynewmethodsofsingle
moleculesspectroscopyasthathasrestrictedframesofapplicationbesides
morecomplicatedtechniqueinvolvedandthefactthatonlysomedefinite
classesofmolecularobjectscanbestudied.
ThemonographisopenedbytheChapterTheRed-EdgeEffects(byAl-
exanderDemchenko)whichpresentsgeneralintroductiontotheproblem
andthoroughlysketchespracticallyallnumerousfieldswhereselectivespec-
troscopyrevealsnewfeaturesandeffects,someofthemareoffundamental
importance.Thisisthemostcomprehensivereviewofdifferentfieldswhere
rededgeexcitationspectroscopyisappliedatthepresenttime.Therichex-
perimentalmaterialgatheredbytheauthorandtheotherresearchersfrom
differentlaboratoriesallovertheglobeservesasabaseforillustrationof
newpossibilitiesandeffectsappearingduetoheterogeneityofspectralcen-
ters,duetothermalfluctuationsofmediaandotherstructuralinhomo-
geneities.ThesecondChapter(byVladimirTomin)isdevotedtotreatment
heterogeneityofmolecularsolutionsandstudyofchargetransfer,CT,and
excitedstateinternalprotontransfer,ESIPT,reactionsinliquidsystems.The
chaptercontentsoriginalclassicalthermodynamicapproachelaboratedto-
getherwiththeco-authors,allowingtodescribethecomplexofneweffects
arisinginmolecularsystemsduetoinhomogeneityoftheirstructures.New
originalresultsinstudyofbroadeningofelectronicspectraofsolutesappear-
inginCTandESIPTstatesandeffectsarisinginsuchreactionsatselective
excitationarepresentedandanalyzed.Importantlythatselectivespectros-
copyopensgoodopportunitytoselectindividualgroupsofsoluteswithdif-
ferentratesofexcitedstatereactionsand,hence,insuchwayonecancontrol
