molecularandevolutionaryaspectsofSIintheBrassicaceaehasbeenexten-
sivelyinvestigated(especiallyforBrassicaspecies)andseveralreviewshave
beenrecentlypublished[SilvaandGoring2001,Fobis-Loisyetal.2004,Taka-
yamaandIsogai2005,Sherman-BroylesandNasrallah2008,Kitashibaand
Nishio2009,Nasrallah2011].
AmongBrassicaspecies,bothobligateautogamousspecies(B.tournefortii)
andxenogamousspecies(e.g.B.campestrisssp.chinensis,B.fruticulosa,
B.nigra,B.oleracea)arepresent[Olsson1960,Williams1978,Eisikowitch
1981,SpringerandWojciechowski2003,Sunetal.2006,WuandSun2006,
Takahataetal.2008].TheamphidiploidB.junceaisreportedtobeself-
compatibleandfacultativeautogamousbecauseofpartiallyoutcrossing[Howard
etal.1916,cit.inMcGregor1976,Downeyetal.1970,Yashiroetal.2001,Wu
andSun2006,Takahataetal.2008].InIndiatheobtainedrateofoutcrossingin
thisspeciesrangedwidelyfrom7.6[LabanaandBanga1984]upto30%[How-
ardetal.1916,cit.inFree1993,SinghandChauhan2003].InEuropethede-
greeofoutcrossinghasnotyetbeenadequatelyinvestigated.Olsson[1960]pre-
sumedthatthedegreeofspontaneousoutcrossinginB.junceawouldbesimilar
tothatofrape(B.napusssp.oleifera),i.e.about30%.VoskresenskayaandLy-
gina[1973,cit.inRakowandWoods1987],usingseedcolourasamarker,re-
portedthatoutcrossingratesbetweenrowsinB.junceavariedfrom3.1to29.4%
andsignificantlydifferedbetweencultivars.AccordingtoHerse[1986],the
crossingrateofB.juncearangesfrom8to34%.InCanadaRakowandWoods
[1987]reportedinterplantoutcrossingratesforthisspeciesbetween1.4and
45.1%(18.7onaverage),buttheydidnotdetectsignificantdifferencesamong
cultivarsandlines.AlthoughSinghandChauhan[2003]reportedthatanSIsys-
temhasnotbeenfoundinB.juncea,morerecently,Chakrabartyetal.[2011]
confirmedself-incompatibilityintheprotogynouslineofIndianmustardderived
fromanintra-specificcross.
Sinapisalbaisrecognizedasanallogamousspecieswithastrongincom-
patibilitysystem[Olsson1960,Gustafsonn1968,Downeyetal.1970,Hinataet
al.1974,ŚnieżkoandWiniarczyk1993,1996,Winiarczyketal.1999,Wuand
Sun2006].AccordingtoOlsson[1952,cit.inRiley1956],inafieldthedegree
ofcross-fertilizationinindividualplantsofwhitemustardrangedfrom92to
100%(99.6onaverage).Thepercentofcrossingdifferedwiththeplotsizein-
creasingfrom31%crossingbetweenplots10mlongand4-rowswide,to45%
crossingbetweenplots2mlongand3-rowswide[Olsson1960].However,itis
alsoreportedthatwhitemustardcanself-pollinatetosomeextent[Springerand
Wojciechowski2003,Fanetal.2007].AccordingtoFanetal.[2007],inChina
theself-compatibilityindexforcultivarsandlinesofS.albarangedbetween
0.01and4.10.TheselfingabilityofS.albacropscultivatedinPolandhasnot
yetbeeninvestigatedindetail.
