Modernityhasrarelybeenpurelymodernist;insteadithasalwaysencompassed
andunfoldedsomemixofmodernandanti-modernelements.InhisBeyond
GoodandEvil(1882),Nietzsche,whoisgenerallyperceivedasaprimaryvoice
ofthemodernismofVictorianandourowntimes,spokeof“aportentous
simultaneousnessofSpringandAutumn,”whereeverythingispregnantwith
itscontrary:
Atthisturning-pointofhistorytheremanifestthemselves,sidebyside,andoften
mixedandentangledtogether,amagnificent,manifold,virgin-forest-likeup-
growthandup-striving,akindofTropicalTempointherivalryofgrowth,andan
extraordinarydecayandself-destruction,]aportentoussimultaneousnessof
SpringandAutumn.

TheExperienceofModernity,claims,thecontradictorynatureofmodernity
stemmedfromthe“senseoflivingintwoworldssimultaneously.”Ontheone
hand,thepublicsharedthefeelingoflivinginarevolutionaryagethatgenerated
explosiveupheavalsinpersonal,socialandpoliticallives.Thisisalandscape
ofsteamengines,automatedfactories,railwaysandvastnewindustrialzones;
alandofteemingcitiesthatgrewovernight,oftenwithdreadfulhuman
consequences;acommunicativezoneofdailynewspapers,telegraphsandother
massmedia,spreadingnewsofincreasinglystrongnationalstatesand
multinationalaggregationsofcapital,ofnewart,technologicalinnovations
andsocialpolicies.Atthesametime,the19th-centurymodernpubliccould
remember,andoftenwishedtobringbackorrevive,whatitwasliketolive,
materiallyandspiritually,inworldsthatwerenotmodernatall.Peoplecould
