Melbourne(PaulBettany)-shownasyoungerandmorehandsomethaninany
earlierfilm.Heispresentedasacynicalopportunist,indifferenttowardsthelot
ofthepoorandproudofhisatheism.Heisalsoaskillfulflatterer.“Hewilltry
tomakeherfallinlovewithhim.Itishismethod,”StockmarwarnsAlbert
aftertheQueen’saccession.CastingLordMelbourneasavillainisacompletely
newtakeonthenarrative-inearlierversionsofVictoria’sbiographieshewas
usuallypresentedasastrongproponentofVictoriaandAlbert’smarriageand
anadvocateofBritishinterests.
Victoria,likemanyneo-Victorianheroines,seemstobeayounggirlwith
thementalityofamodernteenager,onlydressedupinthehistoricallyaccurate
nineteenth-centurycostume.Sheispresentedasavictimofwarringfactions
withinthefamily,whichfurtherbringsherclosertotheassumedtargetaudience
of“daughtersjustgrowingoutoftheirprincessphase.”Sheglancesstraight
