Mypointisthatillnessisnotametaphor,andthatthemosttruthfulwayofregarding
illness-andthehealthiestwayofbeingill-isonemostpurifiedof,mostresistantto,
metaphoricthinking.Yetitishardlypossibletotakeupone’sresidenceinthekingdom
oftheillunprejudicedbytheluridmetaphorswithwhichithasbeenlandscaped.7
InthecaseofChopin’slife,whichcanbeviewedasagrandperformanceinallits
aspects,oneoftheperformanceswhichconstitutethespectacleofhisexistencecan
bethatofgenius.Theillness,whichledtohisdeathattheearlyageofthirty-nine,
hasbeenmythologizedandplacedinadimensionofthehistoryofideas.
CyprianKamilNorwidwroteinthecomposer’sobituarypublishedinDziennik
PolskionOctober25,1849:
RodemWarszawianin,sercemPolak,atalentemświataobywatelFryderykChopin,
zeszedłztegoświata.Chorobapiersiowaprzyspieszyłaśmierćzawczesnąartystywtrzy-
dziestymdziewiątymrokużycia-dniasiedemnastegomiesiącabieżącego.8
[BornaVarsovian,aPoleinhisheart,andinhistalentacitizenoftheworld,Fryderyk
Chopinhasdepartedthisworld.Hischestdiseasehasacceleratedtheprematuredeath
ofthecomposerinhisthirty-ninethyear-ontheseventeenthofthecurrentmonth.9]
Theillnesswhichconsumedhimisreferedtoasuchestdisease”,probablyfor
fearthatpronouncingutuberculosis”wouldhastenthecourseofthemalady,even
inapossibleafterlife,justlikeitwasportrayedinmanyartisticandnon-fiction
testimoniesoftheperiod.
TheRevueetgazettemusicaledeParisinitsOctober21,1849,issueplacedanobitu-
arywhichisaperfectopeningforourinvestigationintotheperformanceofRomantic
geniusandallthenecessaryculturalingredientswhichestablishit.Chopinwasnot
atypicalRomantic,notatypicalgeniusandnotatypicaltuberculosisvictim.The
ailmentisnotevenmentionedintheobituary.However,acertaincompatibilityof
thephysicalandmetaphysicalisnoted:
