indeed,seemtoreflectthezreal,worldandthezreal,calamities.26Itisquiteprobablethat
formanyofhisreaders,eventhosesomewhatlessfamiliarwiththeclassicaltopoi,the
gureofHesioneoftheDeraptuHelenaewouldhavebeencomparabletothewidowand
thedaughtersofValentinianIII,whereastheassassinationsinthehouseoftheAtreides
werenotmuchdiferentfromthedynasticdramasoftheVandalrulers.Inotherwords,as
theItalianscholarconcludes,thezmyth,wasnotonlyamerelyrhetoricalelement;itcould
stillbeusedtorepresentpeople,spassionsandsuferings.
Naturally,particularlyrelevantinsuchacontextseemstheproblemtowhatextentinthe
miniatureepiccomposedinVandalAfricaonecanstilldiscoverfeaturespeculiartoear-
lierexamplesofthisliteraryform.Hencethequestionoftheepyllionzheritage,posedin
thetitleofthepresentpartofmybook.Asamatteroffact,thealreadyquotedmonograph
byBrightdoesnotbringhereafullysatisfactoryanswer,aboveallforthisveryreason
thattheauthorhasnotdevelopedinefectasufcientlythoroughdefinitionofwhatan
epyllionreallyis.27Consequently,hisbookoferingforthemostpartagoodanalysisof
singlepoems(eventhoughIdonotalwaysagreewithcertainpointshemakes)does
notreallyshowinamoresystematicwaywhataspectsofDracontius,spoeticscouldand
shouldbeinterpretedaszepyllic,andwhatis,andpreciselyhowdeepis,theepyllionheri-
tagetobefoundinhispoemsandintheAegritudo.
Undoubtedly,asIhavementionedabove,theminiatureepicwithitsinnateexperi-
mentalismresiststooeasyortoonarrowclassifications.Tisdoesnotmean,however,
thatoursomewhatzwayward,genre(ornon-genre)cannotbedescribedinanyproper
manner.Genialinitssimplicityandsafelyapplicableto(probably)alltextseverlabeledas
epylliaseemstheformulaprovidedbyBouquetandWolfintheirprefacetotheedition
ofDracontius,sworks:“poèmeni…,d,unelongueurcompriseentre100et1000vers,
écritenhexamètresdactyliquesetempruntantsonsujetàlamythologieetauxcycles
épiques,avecuneprédilectionpourleshistoiresamoureusesetcriminelles.”28Asitap-
pearsthough,weneednotbesominimalisticinourstatementsnottorisktoomuchsche-
bersofherfar-famedsenatewanderallovertheworld,gettingmeansofexistencefromthebounty
ofkindlystrangers,movingthetearsofbeholders,andteachingtheuncertaintyandinstabilityof
