ItmaybeofinteresttoyoutoknowthattheTribunal,apartfromthe
8regionalworkshopsithasorganizedtodisseminateinformationonthelawofthe
seadisputesettlementsystemoftheConvention,
15hasalsobeenassociatedwith
otherrelevanttrainingprogrammes.
In2007,withthesupportoftheNipponFoundation,theTribunalestablished
anannualcapacity-buildingandtrainingprogrammeondisputesettlementunder
theConvention.Inits2008-2009cycle,fivegovernmentofficialsandresearchers
fromChina,Gabon,Indonesia,KenyaandRomaniabenefitedfromthispro-
gramme.ThecurrentcycleincludessevenparticipantsfromArgentina,Brazil,
Greece,Mozambique,Oman,SouthAfricaandTogo.Duringthenine-month
programme,participantswillalsobeexposedtotheworkofvariousinternational
organizationswithmandatesrelatedtothelawoftheseaandmaritimelaw.
TheTribunalhasalsoinstitutedaninternshipprogramme,whichwas
launchedin1997.Todate,atotalof205internshavebeenadmitted.In2010,
18participantsfromdifferentcountriesparticipatedintheprogramme;nineof
thembenefitedfromaKOICAgrantthatprovidesfinancialassistanceto
candidatesfromdevelopingcountries.Informationonthisinternshipprogrammeis
availableontheITLOSwebsite.
IamalsopleasedtoinformyouthattheInternationalFoundationforthe
LawoftheSeaorganizesaSummerAcademyattheTribunal’spremisesin
Hamburgforstudentsfromdifferentpartsoftheworld.Duringaperiodoffour
weeks,participantsattendhighlevellecturesonmaritimeandlawofthesea
matters.InformationontheSummerAcademymaybeobtainedthroughthe
websiteoftheFoundation.
