Studyconsistsoftwochapters:onedevotedtothenovelsbyGombro-
wicz,theothertothenovelsbyBeckett,finalisedwithConclusions.The
twomainchaptersarealmostsymmetricallyidenticalintermsoforder:
bothofthemcommencewithHpreliminaryremarks”whichserveasin-
troductions.InthemIquotespecificpassagesfromallsixnovelsand
enumeratetheirgeneralproperties,e.g.autodiegesis,embedding,and
rudimentaryfunctionsofthenarrators.Subsequentlyinsectionsfrom
1.1.1to1.1.4andfrom2.1.1to2.1.3.4,Ianalysethenarrativestructure
ofthenovelsandconcludethatallofthemfeatureexplicitlyopposing
andseeminglyself-exclusiveformalvectors,suchasfictionalautobiog-
raphyandepistemologicallimitations,pastreferenceofthestoriesand
theauthenticallyconcurrentprocessoftherelating,orembeddingand
interdiegesis.InthefinalsubsectionsIcometotheconclusionsthatthree
devicesaccountfortheuntypicalstructure:monologicity,concurrency
andorality.Theypresupposeaunityandhomologyofnarrativesubject
andhissingularity;theconflationofthenarratedwiththenarratingand

Inthefinalsectionsofbothchapters,1.2and2.2,Idealwiththecon-
sequencesofthenarrativestructureofthenovelsandtheirinfluence
uponthesemanticmechanism.Namely,forvariousreasonsIprovide,
monologicity,concurrencyandoralityareconsideredanti-narrative.Yet
theirprominentandpervasivepresenceinthestructurenecessitates
thattheybereapproachedfromadifferentperspectiveanddealtwith
intheprocessofdetailedandmeticulousexaminations.Firstandfore-
most,theyhavebeenassociatedwiththenegativemechanisminterms
offormandstructure:thenovelsasparodies,contestationsorcritiques
ofliterarycommunicationmeans.However,takingacuefromnarrato-
logicalexplicationsofthedevices,Icometotheconclusionthatatthe
costofthenarrativeGombrowicz’sHdramatic”novelsandBeckett’sHthe-
atrical”novelsapproximatetothedramaticmode.Inotherwords,be-
