attheUniversityofWarsawin1977.SincetheInstituteoftheOrientalStudies
didnotrunaPhDprogrammeatthattime,M.Mejorhadtoformallyenrolin
adoctoralcourseattheInstituteofRomanStudies.Duetoformalrequirements,
ProfessorStanisławKałużyński(1925–2007)becamehisfirstsupervisorandafter
ayear,ProfessorMariaKrzysztofByrski,thethenheadoftheSectionofIndology
attheInstituteofOrientalStudies,tookover.
In1979,asaPhDcandidate,MarekMejorparticipatedintwointernational
conferencesthe4thWorldSanskritConferenceinWeimar(paper:flSomere-
marksonthepratītyasamutpdda”,publishedin1986inSanskritandWorldCulture:
ProceedingsoftheFourthWorldSanskritConferenceoftheInternationalAssociation
ofSanskritStudies,Weimar,May23-30,1979,ed.WolfgangMorgenroth,Akade-
mieVerlag,Berlin)andthe2ndCsomadeKőrösSymposiuminCsopak,Hungary
(paper:flThefirstdescriptionofTibetinPolishfrom1628”,publishedin1980
inActaOrientaliaAcademiaeScientiarumHungaricae,vol.34,fasc.1–3),which
highlyinuencedhisinterestsandfurtherscholarlyformation.
In1980,stillaPhDcandidate,MarekMejorreceivedasix-weekscholarship
toBudapest,whichatthattimewasoneoftheleadingcentresofTibetanStud-
iesinEurope.HespentlonghoursattheLibraryoftheHungarianAcademyof
Sciences,makingnotesandcopyingfragmentsofimportantbookswhichatthat
timewereunavailableinPoland.WhilestillinBudapest,M.Mejorobtained
asix-monthMichaelCoulsonJuniorResearchFellowshipattheWolfsonCollege
inOxford,wherehestayedin1981–1982.Hestudiedunderthesupervisionof
ProfessorRichardGombrich,oneofthemostprominentSanskritologistsand
Buddhologists,andProfessorBimalKrishnaMatilal,agreatauthorityonSanskrit
andIndianphilosophy.
On13December1981,whilestillinOxford,MarekMejorlearnedthatmar-
tiallawhadbeenimposedinPoland.Thefollowingmonthswereextremely
stressful.ThecountrybecamecutoffromtherestofEurope.M.Mejorsecretly
exchangedlettersandinformationwithhisfamilyandcolleagueswhostayedin
thecountry.AfterhisreturntoPolandin1982,hefacedmajorfinancialdicul-
ties,ashewasnotabletogetajob,partiallyduetothedicultpoliticalsituation
inthecountry.Luckily,ProfessorStanisławKałużyński,Vice-RectoroftheUni-
versityofWarsawatthattime,wasabletohelpM.Mejorfindemploymentatthe
InstituteofOrientalStudies.Thusbeganhislongtimescholarlyaliationwith
theUniversityofWarsaw.From1982untilhisretirementin2020,MarekMejor
conductedseminarsandlecturesforstudentsofIndologyandMongolianand
