didnotrunaPhDprogrammeatthattime,M.Mejorhadtoformallyenrolin

adoctoralcourseattheInstituteofRomanStudies.Duetoformalrequirements,

ProfessorStanisławKałużyński(1925–2007)becamehisﬁrstsupervisorandafter

ayear,ProfessorMariaKrzysztofByrski,thethenheadoftheSectionofIndology

attheInstituteofOrientalStudies,tookover.

In1979,asaPhDcandidate,MarekMejorparticipatedintwointernational

highlyinﬂuencedhisinterestsandfurtherscholarlyformation.

In1980,stillaPhDcandidate,MarekMejorreceivedasix-weekscholarship

toBudapest,whichatthattimewasoneoftheleadingcentresofTibetanStud-

iesinEurope.HespentlonghoursattheLibraryoftheHungarianAcademyof

Sciences,makingnotesandcopyingfragmentsofimportantbookswhichatthat

timewereunavailableinPoland.WhilestillinBudapest,M.Mejorobtained

asix-monthMichaelCoulsonJuniorResearchFellowshipattheWolfsonCollege

inOxford,wherehestayedin1981–1982.Hestudiedunderthesupervisionof

ProfessorRichardGombrich,oneofthemostprominentSanskritologistsand

Buddhologists,andProfessorBimalKrishnaMatilal,agreatauthorityonSanskrit

andIndianphilosophy.

On13December1981,whilestillinOxford,MarekMejorlearnedthatmar-

tiallawhadbeenimposedinPoland.Thefollowingmonthswereextremely

stressful.ThecountrybecamecutoffromtherestofEurope.M.Mejorsecretly

exchangedlettersandinformationwithhisfamilyandcolleagueswhostayedin

thecountry.AfterhisreturntoPolandin1982,hefacedmajorﬁnancialdiﬁcul-

ties,ashewasnotabletogetajob,partiallyduetothediﬁcultpoliticalsituation

inthecountry.Luckily,ProfessorStanisławKałużyński,Vice-RectoroftheUni-

versityofWarsawatthattime,wasabletohelpM.Mejorﬁndemploymentatthe

InstituteofOrientalStudies.Thusbeganhislongtimescholarlyaﬁliationwith

theUniversityofWarsaw.From1982untilhisretirementin2020,MarekMejor

conductedseminarsandlecturesforstudentsofIndologyandMongolianand
