OwingtothepointsnotedinSaunders)speech,
onecandetectimportantaspectsofhisbiography.
Thereheshowedthathewaswell-versedinthe
currentideasofBritishphilosophyandaesthetics,
demonstratedextensiveknowledgeofwritingon
art,thustestifyingthathehadreceivedanexcellent
educationandthatmostofhistimewasdedicated
notonlytoengravingbutalsotointellectualread-
ing.Itispossiblethathewasadoctorofphilosophy,
whichismentionedonlyinthepublicationofhis
speech37andintheinscriptionundertheportrait
ofCanova.
