Butitisnotalwayseasytomakeadecisionwithoutaconsensus.Tenyears
ago,inaninterviewforthemagazinePolityka,Ispoke,amongotherthings,
aboutmakingdifcultdecisions.Ithenrecalledtheexampleofthefilm
TheLonelinessoftheLong-DistanceRunner,whichIhadwatchedbackinmy
studentdays.Thefilmdepictsthedilemmasandemotionsoftheprotago-
nist:aborstalinmate.Resocialisationwasachievedbypracticingsports.
Theboyhadtodecidewhethertowintherace,reafrmingthegovernor
oftheborstalinhisbeliefinthevalidityofthesystembased,intheboy’s
view,oninjusticeandviolenceandgainagoodreputationandotherbene-
fitsinreturn,ortodeliberatelylose,forfeitpossibleprivileges,butprotest
againstthemethodsusedintheborstal.
Suchthoughtsmakehimfeellonely;everythingisalluptohim.Thepoint
isthatmanagers,whenmakingadecision,mayalsofeellonely.Evenwhen
consultationsareheld,thewholeburdenofchoiceoftenunpopularrests
ontheirshoulders.Inthecaseofverydifcultdecisionsburdenedwith

sharesinacompanycalledInforBiznesfromAxelSpringer.Buyingthese
assetswasveryexpensive,andwewereinadifcultfinancialsituationat
