standingmechanismsgoverningoperationsinthewriter’smindleading
tostructuringthemeaninginthelanguagesystemusedbyitsspeakers
tocommunicate,conveyknowledge,andexpressemotions.Atranslator,
consciousofhowthemeaningiscreatedinasourcelanguage,isableto
recreatethemeaninginatargetlanguage.
Translatinghumourrequiresspecificcapacitytorecognisewhatare
thecircumstancesthatprovokelaughterandwhataretheconditionsthat
agiventext/speechmustfulfiltobeconsideredfunnybythehumour
recipientsthespeakersofbothsourceandtargetlanguage.
Translatingatextalsomeanstomakeitunderstandabletoadiferent
languagereader,thereaderwithdiferentculturalidentityshapedbyhis/
herlanguageperspective.InUmbertoEco’swords,translationis“saying
almostthesamething”inadiferentlanguage(Eco2005:7),thetrans-
lationmeanstransferringatextintoanewculturalenvironment.
Atranslatedtextismadeunderstandabletoareaderifatranslator
knowsthecognitivecapacitiesofthereadergroupthetextisdirected
at.Itisespeciallyimportantincaseoftranslatingliteraturededicatedto
children.Youngreadersconstituteagroupofliteraturerecipientsthatcalls
forspecialattentionduetotheirneedsandexpectationsastothecontent
andlanguageusedinchildren’sbooks.
Theobjectiveofthismonographistopresentatranslationprocedure
thatrespondstotherequirementsmentionedaboveandthatcanbeapplied
intranslatinghumourinchildren’sliterature,withthespecialfocuson
translatingwordplays,funnyphrasesandpropernames.
