Thisisaveryembarrassingstatementbecauseitsuggeststhattheideaof
serializationdependsonsomethingabsurd(impossible),whichisneither
intheimaginary,conceptual,or,finally,realorder.
Seriesneedtheemptysquare,withoutwhichnothingwouldmovefor-
wardorfunction.Theobject=xisnotdistinguishablefromitsplace.Still,
itischaracteristicofthisplacethatitconstantlydisplacesitself,justasitis
typicaloftheemptysquaretojumpceaselessly.GillesDeleuze,referring
tothefindingsofPhillipeSollers,likestoinvoketheblindspot,sodesig-
natingthisalwaysmobilepointwhichentailscertainblindness,butabout
whichuwriting”anduseeing”becomepossible,becauseseriesorganize
themselvesthereinasgenuineuliter-emes,”aconceptofstructuralormeto-
nymiccausality,thepositionofazero,definedaslackingitsownidentity,
andwhichconditionstheserialconstitutionofnumbers(Sollers1988).
Series,Line,Stream
Thekeyquestionofthisbookisthedilerencebetweenseries,line,and
stream.Theseriesalwaystendstocombineelementsintosomemoreor
lessarbitrarywhole.Theseriesgatherselementslookingfortheprinciple
ofunitingtheseelements.Inasense,theseriesconservestheelements,
placingthemonlyinamoreabstractorder.Theline,especiallytheline
ofnumber,ontheotherhand,establishesasequencethatdoesnotaspire
toanyruleorgeneralization.Thelineisconcreteandtangible,devoid
ofabstractness.Thepowertodiscernelementaryidentitiesiscontained
inthestream.Streamaimstodestroyelementsandblurthemforthe
sakeofflow.Thisgivestheimpressionthatanecessaryfeatureofthedata
streamandstreamingistheblurringoftheirsource,initial,andelemen-
taryidentities.
Thestreamedimageisnolongeranimage,butapuredataflow,the
identityofwhichisonlygivenattheendbythereading,decoding,and
capturingprocess.Thefluxisalwaysmolecularandnevermolar.The
generalizedstreamingsocietyisanentirelyfluidized,processualsociety,
neverdefinitivelyestablished.Thetransitionfromasocietyofseriality
toastreamingsocietyisthetransitionfromlocalandarbitraryseriesand
