Thischapterisconcernedwithimagereconstructionsmethodsthatarein-
tendedforreconstructingbinaryimagesfromlimited-angleprojections.Themeth-
odsaremotivatedbycross-boreholeimaging,however,ourconsiderationscanbe
alsousefulforotherapplicationsofbinarytomography.Amongseveralobjec-
tivefunctionsthatarewell-knowninbinarytomography,wefocussontheleast-
squaresobjectivefunctionpenalizedwiththesmoothnesstermderivedfromthe
Markovrandomfieldmodel.Wepresentafewstrategiesthatmaybeusedfor
minimizationoftheobjectivefunction.Oneofthemincorporatesanadditional
non-convextermintotheobjectivefunctiontoenforcebinarity,andthentheD.C.
algorithmisappliedtominimizethedistancebetweentwoconvexfunctions.In
thesecondone,themean-fieldreferencedistributionandmean-fieldannealing
areappliedtoestimatetheglobalmaximizeroftheGibbs-Boltzmanndistribution
associatedwiththeMRFpenalizedobjectivefunction.Finally,wediscussthe
algorithmthatappliesabinarysteeringtotheprojectedgradientalgorithm.Very
efficientimplementationsofthealgorithmsarealsogiven.Thenumericalresults
arepresentedfornoise-freeandnoisydatatakenfrombinaryboreholetomogra-
phy.
