ues,andvaryingsulfur,andashcontent.Teparametersvarieddepending
onwherethesamplewastakeninthefield.Teexactparametersofthesam-
pleswerepreviouslydeterminedbyelementarylaboratorymethods(Tab.1)
toestablishareferencepointforfurtherresearchusingtheLIBStechnique.

browncoalsamplesmayresultfromthefactthatitscontentsarerelatively
lowinrelationtothevolumeoftheentiresample(from0.16%-2.33%).
Sampleno.1alsoshowsacharacteristicpeakforthenitrogenspectrumat
awavelengthof575.0nm.Nodistinctnitrogenspectrumwasobservedin
theremainingsamples.
Insamples1and2(Fig.4,5),thehighestintensitiesofcharacteristicele-
ments(C,S,N,O)wererecordedamongallanalyzedbrowncoals.Teywere
themostreliableofthetestedsamples,thankstowhichitwaspossibleto
determinethechemicalcomposition.Muchlowerintensitieswererecorded
insamples6and7(Fig.6,7).However,despitetherelativelylowintensities
obtainedinsamples6and7,thesevaluescorrespondedtothewavelengths
