fromromanticconventions.ThemarriageofDorotheaand
LadislawinMiddlemarch,whichIdiscussindetailinChapter
2,isaperfectcaseinpoint.Thisplotelementhasantagonized
thenovel’sfeministcriticsfordecadesandhasbecomethe
recognizedcruxoftheircriticism(Hardy1985:113).Isuggest
