ofvariouspopularnineteenth-centurynovels.HSillyNovelsby
LadyNovelists”demonstratesthatshewaswellawareofthe
stereotypesandformulasofpopularfictionandthatfactgivesus
licensetoanalysethepossibleinfluencethatthepopularnovels
shereviewedhadonherownwriting.Furthermore,thereare
twoearlynineteenth-centurynovels,CorinneandThePirate,that
arementioneddirectlyinTheMillontheFlossinconversations
betweenMaggieandPhilipWakem.Theseexplicitreferences
indicatethatGeorgeEliotwantedherreaderstoseethesetexts
asacontextoracontrastforherownwriting.Andfinally,
becausesomecontemporaryreviewsofthenoveldiscovered
importantplotparallelswithMrsGaskell’sTheMoorlandCottage
(1851),thisisalsoanalysed.Inthissection,IalsorefertoEliot’s
firstpublishedworkoffiction,ashortstoryentitledHTheSad
FortunesoftheReverendAmosBarton,”whichcanbeseenas
apreludetoTheMillontheFloss.
