Introduction

Theprocessofcorporateinternationalisationinthecontemporarybusiness

worldisaccelerating.Thisisduetoavarietyoffactors,suchasglobalisation

andregionalisationofbusinessoperationsaswellaseconomicintegration.This

castsanewlightontheneedtoidentifythefactorswhichaffectcorporatedeci-

sionsonwhethertoenterforeignmarketsandwhichonestochooseforacom-

pany’sexpansion.

FormanyyearsPolandhasbeenanareaofexpansionforforeigninvestors.

ForeignentitieswhichinvestinthiscountryoftenchoosetheSilesianVoivod-

shipasthelocationfortheirinvestmentprojects.Thisisahighlypositivephe-

nomenonastheinflowofFDIcapitalleadstonumerouschangesofquantitative

andqualitativecharacter.Theyareconnectedwithcreationofnewjobs,modern-

isationofcompanies’stockofmachines,launchofnewproductionmethodsand

technologiesandstructuralchanges,whichcontributetothesocialandeconomic

development.Oneshouldkeepinmind,however,thattheSilesianVoivodship,

aswellasotherPolishregions,areputtingalotofeffortsintoattractingforeign

investments.Therefore,theVoivodshiphastoidentifysomeadvantageswhich

wouldimproveitscompetitivepositionandmakeitamoreattractiveplacefor

investingcapital.

Atpresentalotofresearchisbeingconductedtoevaluatetheattractiveness

ofspecificcountriesandregionsforforeigninvestors.Intheavailableliterature,

however,therearenostudiesshowingacompletepictureoftheinvestment

attractivenessoftheSilesianVoivodship,andthisinformationgapneedstobe

filled.Thefindingsofthestudiesmayserveasasourceofinformationforma-

nagerswhoneedtotakedecisionsaboutpenetratingforeignmarketsandexpan-

dingtheiractivitiesintotheSilesianVoivodship.Theresultsofthestudiesmay

alsoformthebasisfortheformulationofdirectivestobefollowedbylocalau-

thoritiesoftheVoivodship,poviats,communesandotherinstitutions,inorderto

gainacompetitiveadvantage,raisetheprofileofthesedestinationsand,con-

sequently,attractforeigninvestors.

Thisbookaimstopresenttheresultsoftheresearchintotheinvestment

attractivenessoftheSilesianVoivodship.Theauthorsmadeanattempttofind

theanswerstothefollowingquestions:whatdeterminesthecurrentattractive-

nessoftheSilesianVoivodshipasanareaofinvestmentexpansionandwhich

factorsaregoingtodetermineitsattractivenessinthefuture?
