Introduction

Bakhtinprobablywasnotdecisiveeitherinchoosinghimaspatronsaint

oftheLaboratoryofReportageorinhisworkbecomingtheinspirationof

the“polyphonicreportagenovel.”Itismore-asfarasmyunderstanding

isconcerned-abouttheanalyticalandconstructionalvaluesofhisconcept.

Indeed,inthisvolumewedelveintocontemplatingthedistinctionbetween

polyphonyasdescribedbyBakhtin,usedinprosefiction,andpolyphony

ofaccountsgathered,selectedandorderedbytheauthor(orauthors)of

a“reportagenovel”;ZygmuntZiątekonlyjustscratchesthesurfaceofthis

issueinhisessay“ReportageasLiterature,”whenhefollowsthestepsof

LudwikFlaszenandrecallsthenotionoftestimony,inwritingabout“mirrors

ofdiversestatesofmind”and“nodesofcollectiveexperience”undergone

bytheprotagonistsofMiller’sreportageabouttheGdańskShipyardprotests.

ReferringtoBakhtininatheoreticalsense,withoutengaginginany

criticismofhisstudyorconsideringwhetheritisrelevantincontemporary

literarystudies,issimplymeanttopointoutthreemainpostulatesvalidin

thepracticeofthepolyphonicnovel:theimportanceofdifferentiatedvoices

andpointsofviewwithinthecommunityrecountingtheirexperience;alesser

roleforthenarratorinframingthoseexperiences,throughthenarrator’s

recountinglanguage;andthegroup,synchroniccharacteroftheexperience.

PreciselythisconstructionvaluedescribedbyBakhtinplaceshimatthestarting

pointofthenarrativetechnique,withnoaspirationsastodefiningthestate

ofstudyregardingthisthought.Infact,whiletellingagroupstory,wemust

putfactsinorder,structurethem,removeinconsistencies-andusethis

constructiontoarrangethepast.Thetaskofthereportagejournalistisnot

justtodescribeit,buttorevealseamsandsupportelementsusedinthe

processofarrangingastory.Atthispoint,journalismtouchesanthropology.

IV.

AstheLaboratoryofReportagemaybetheonlyplaceinEuropewheretheory

andpractice-accordingtothevisionofAristotle,thebiggestcategoryclassifier

-gohandinhand,deepeningoneanotherinamutualtransferofaimsand

potential,ithasseemedimportanttoustoproperlybroadentheLR’s

methodologicalandepistemologicalbase.

Thusthisbookisashortsummaoftheworkperformedtodate,and

aretrospectiveviewuponwhathasalreadybeencontemplated,butalso

astartingpointforfurtherresearchandpublications.Itsgoalistodeliver

atheoreticalbasisforscientificreflectiononthereportagegenre,aswellas
