thesedimentaryprocesseshasbeenthereforerestricted.
Beyondthe“Cave”zonethecavefaciesofsediments
(i.e.,sedimentswithhighamountoflimestonedebris
andclay)arelimitedmostlytothelowerpartofthe
sequence.Itisnoteworthythattherangeofthecave
wasmuchlargerinthepast,asthecaveiscontinuously
shrinkingduetothephysicaldisintegrationoftherock
whichformsthewallsandceilingofthecave.Tearea
situatednowinthe“AbrilShelter”and“Overhang”
zonesweresituatedonceinsidethecave,buthavebeen
exposedduetoacollapseofrockyceiling.Tisexplains
thepresenceoftypicalcavefaciesinlowerpartofthe
sequence,asthesesedimentshavebeendepositedinside
acave.Teupperpartofthesequencehasbeenaccu-
mulatedafertheceilingcollapseandthereforethese
sedimentsrepresentotherfacies(eolianandlorcolluvial
accumulation).
HISTORYOFTHESTRATIGRAPHIC
APPROACH
AlthoughQuaternaryserieshasrelativelylowtotal
thickness(usuallybelow1.5m),thesitehasquite
complexstratigraphy.Temainstratigraphicproblem
isacorrelationbetweenthezonesofthesite.Especially
difcultistocorrelatetheareainsidethecaveandclose
totherockywalls(“Cave”and“Abri”zones)withthe
areaofexternalplateau(“Overhang”).Inzonessituated
closetothelimestonewalls,i.e.in“Cave”and“Abri”
,
thephysicaldisintegrationoflimestonerockservedas
animportantsourceofclasticmaterial.Sedimentary
processesintheseareasinvolvedtheaccumulationof
limestoneclastsandasaconsequencethesediments
aredevelopedhereincavefacies.At“Overhang”the
accumulationoflimestonedebriswaslimitedbecause
ofadistancefromthewalls,andsedimentationwas
dominatedbyotherprocesses.Tissituationcauses
