Againstallappearances,theformalpositionofthenumeralinPolishisexceptionally
strong.Duetoitsuniqueness,instabilityandmulti-directionality,asurveyofallproblems
shouldnotraisereservationsorsurpriseteachersofPolishorpublishersofresource
booksofPolishasaforeignlanguage.
Inparticular,itmustbestressedthatthePolishnumeral,duetotheabove-mentioned
heterogeneityandotherspecificcharacteristics,doesnotfollowanygrammaticalrules
previouslyacquiredbytheforeignerlearningPolish.
Hencetheideaforitspossiblycomprehensivemorphologicalclassificationandthe
presentationofitssyntaxinpracticeinsuchawaythatitsdisputableroleandfunctions
instructuresofthenominalgroup–whichis,inessence,difficulttoestablish–become
moreaccessibletotheforeignertryingtodiscoverallsecretsofthePolishlanguage.
Basicinformationwithreferencetotheinflectionandsyntaxofnumeralscanbe
foundinPartIofthisbook.Itpresentsnotonlydefinitionsofparticularheadwords,
inflectionalpatterns,andthesyntacticfeaturesofall40numerals,butalsootherdetailed
information,e.g.referringtoinflectionalpatternsofmulti-wordcardinalnumerals,func-
tionsofordinalnumerals,etc.
Acarefulreaderwillfindherenumerousexplanationswhichwillhelphim/herunder-
standthepeculiaritiesofPolishnumeralsorwordsindicatingreferencestonumbers.
Itisalsoworthmentioningthatthisvolumemakesuseofasmalltreasureboxof
Polishphraseologicalexpressionswiththenumeralastheirmostprominentingredient.
PartIIofthistextbookcomprisesexercisesintheinflectionandsyntaxofnumerals.
Theideafortheselectionandarrangementofover200exerciseswasdevelopedin
classeswithelementary,intermediateandadvancedstudentsofPolish.Theirvaluable
commentscontributedtoorderingthewholebodyofexercisesinsuchawayastohelp
potentialusersofthisbookacquirethepreviouslypresentedstructuresmoreeasily,and
learnfasterandautomatizenotonlyformsbutalsothecapricioussyntaxofPolish
numerals.
AsaresultofdiscussionswithforeignerslearningPolishandsystematicelimination
ofredundantexamples,inflectionandsyntaxinexercises–whicharedesignedas“alter-
nates”5–maketheentirecollectionofexercises,thoughformallydividedintoAandB,
auniformconceptualwhole.Sentenceconstructionsusedinexercisesarecharacterized
bysimplicityandusefulness.Consideringproblemsthenon-nativespeakerofPolishhas
