inEdenworkedthroughEve.”1HeaddsthatflAdamneverstruck[him]as
theambitioustype,”andhe,Muldoon,didnotlikeEve,becausesheflwasso
treasonousandseductivetopoorAdam,whowasnomatchforher,andwho
washenceforthcondemnedtoworkandlivefromthesweatofhisbrow.”2
Attheendofthenovel,Muldoon-atalosstounderstandhowtheflNew”
independentwomanhasemergedintheearlysixties-declaresthatwehave
allbynowflgottenwindofthedivorceofAdamandEve.”3Tosomeextent,and
somewhatprovocatively,itmaybearguedthatthemetaphorofflthedivorce
ofAdamandEve”couldbeappliedtothemusic-literaturerelationshipas
itdevelopedinEnglandinthesecondpartoftheeighteenthcenturyand
earlynineteenthcentury.Followingagradualprocessinthecourseofthe
Georgianperiod,themusic-literaturerelationshipwaseventuallytoleadto
aninevitabledivorce.ToborrowAlonso’sphrase,thenovelwasindeedflno
match”formusic.
Inthepastyears,moreandmorecross-disciplinarystudieshavecometo
theforeinthehumanities,givingrisetointerestingresearchintothenotions
ofintertextualityandintermediality,inwhichthelinksbetweenthevisual
artsandthenovel,4betweenmusicandpainting,5andbetweenmusicand
literature,6havebeenvariouslyanalysedanddiscussed.InhisstudyLaurence
SterneandtheOriginsoftheMusicalNovel,WilliamFreedmanarguedthat
TristramShandywasafundamentallyflmusical”novelthatborrowednot
onlymetaphors,butalsostructuralelements,fromtheartofmusic.7While
