thanthemainstreamsocietyrealizes,andtheyarethriving
basedonnewvaluesthatverymuchresembletraditional
ways.

EversincetheCivilRightsMovementofthe1960sadvancedethnicmi-
norities,NativeAmericanliteraturehasgreatlyenrichedtheAmericanliter-
arycanon.ThefirstwaveofNativeAmericanwritersdevotedtheirworks
primarilytothethemeofIndianstruggletochoosebetweenthewhiteman’s
worldandthereservationperceivedashomelandandasthefinalplaceof
one’sidentityquest.Formanyyearsreservationexperienceremainedthefo-
calthemeofAmericanIndianliterature,despitethefactthatIndianpeople
havebeensystematicallymovingintourbanareaseversincethetimeofthe
firstrelocation.Thehistoryoftheseless-known,urbanAmericanIndians
hasrecentlygainedtheatentionitdeserves.Withinthepasttenyears,sev-
eralNativeAmericanwritershavedevotedtheirworksoffictionandnon-
fictiontotheportrayalandanalysisofAmericanIndianurbanexperience.
