assumetherankofnationalheroes.

whichhelpsitrebuildacommunalidentityandbraceitselfagainstcurrentthreats.
IdeeplyhopethatsuchanKexplosionofmemory’ispending—notonlyinPoland.
Meanwhile,theReaderisoleredabookinwhichtheproblemsofmemory,forget-
tingandcreatinghavebeenexaminedfromabroadinterdisciplinaryperspective.
Researchinsociology,psychologyandculturalstudiesisjuxtaposedherewithchap-
tersonmemoryinliterature,film,themediaandvisualarts.Ourauthorslookatthe
mutualrelationsbetweenmemoryandimagination,fantasisingandmanipulating,
forgettingandcreating.Partoftheaimofthisbookisnotonlytocontributetoaca-
demicknowledgeonthenatureofhumanmemory,butalsotoinspiresocialinitia-
tivesopposingtheappropriationofcollectivememoryforshort-termpoliticalgoals.
