InthebattleforthenewintelligibilityinwhichtheFuturistsplacedtheiractiv-
ities,thenegationoftraditionandpastmodelsplayedacentralrole.Suchnegation
wasrelatednotonlytothedesiretoshaketheworldseenaslethargic.Italsoimplied
thecreationofaspaceforthenewgenerations,fortheoneswhosawtheinevitable
innerchangeimplicatedintheadventofindustrialisation:menwhosawmachines
assymbolsofanewsociety.
Tequestionofpreciselywhichtraditionisbeingdiscardediselucidatedbythe
Manifestoquotedabove.InittheFuturistsexpresstheirdesiretodestroymuseums,
librariesandallkindsofshelterforinstitutionalmemory.Comparingmuseums
withcemeteries,themovementrejectswhatitseesastheunproductivereverential
placeoccupiedbyculturalestablishmentsinsociety:theyareplacesoneshouldvisit
onceayearinordertosalutethedead,andnothingmore.
TeFuturistsregardthemselvesasactivists,butintendtoadoptanactivism
informedbywhattheycalltheKangularity’ofthings,analternativetotraditional
formsofappreciationofobjects.Futuristactivismisintendedtoactasarath-
erviolentreminderofthecolourfulnessoflife,inoppositiontothelifelessness
ofinstitutionalculture.Moreover,inagesturethatislesseasilygraspedtoday,
butmakessensewithinthepremisesofthemovement,Marinettiandhisgroup
envisionwarasthehighestexpressionoftheconflictofthings,asaspontaneous
eruptionofpossibilitiesthatembodiesanattemptedsolutiontotheproblemof
lifeinmotion(ibid.63).
TeFuturistscanconceiveofnopossibleco-existencebetweenthepastandthe
future.Teadmirationofworksofartfromthepastis,accordingtothem,awaste
ofthebestofhumanabilities,andisasharmfulasKprolongedpaternalprotec-
tionforyoungspirits.’Tepresent,alongsideaconstantprojectiontowardstimes
tocome,is,initself,themovement.TeFuturistdisregardfortheaccountingof
timeisexpressedinanotherexcerptfromtheManifesto:KTimeandSpacedied
yesterday.Wearealreadylivingintheabsolute,sincewehavealreadycreatedthe
eternalomnipresentspeed’4(Marinettiqtd.inibid.84).Itiseasytoseehowsuch
avisioncouldcoincidewiththatoffascism,inwhichahaltinchronologicaltime
isenvisionedastheestablishmentofaperfectsocialform.Velocity,inthissense,is
responsibleforanenlargementofsensibilitythatshouldbefollowedtotheletter.
FortheFuturists,theactofpublishingtheirManifestosinnewspapersand
showingtheconsonanceofavant-gardeideaswiththeinstantaneousinformation
ofdailynewswasofcrucialimportance.Futuristtechniquesofpromotionillustrate
thiswell.Narrativesofthegroup’sactivitiesweredistributedindilerentmedia,cre-
atingabundantexposure,which,despitethequestionablelevelofacceptancethey
enjoyed,servedtopopularisethemovement,asitdidwithbrandnewproductsand
simplifiednewsofdistantworlds.Suchstrategieswerealientotheartsestablishment
