isdedicatedisthelinedetector,thatis,thedetectorofelongatedobjects.The
descriptionsoftheremainingmethodsareauxiliarywithrespecttothepresenta-
tionofthelinedetector,becausetheyconstituteanexperimentalareaforthethe
methodslaterusedinthedesignofthisdetector.
Theaccumulationmethodsemergedincloserelationtothedevelopmentofthe
Houghtransform(HT).ThisbookisnotamanualoftheHT,butisdevotedto
someapplicationsofitsfarreachinggeneralisation.Thereaderinterestedinastudy
oftheHTcanrefertothereviewpapers[IK88,Lea93,KHE95]andbooks,for
example[BB82,Lea92,NA02].AninterestingbookbyaPolishauthoris[Żor00].
Thedescribedstudiesareofappliedcharacter.Thetheoryispresentedtothe
extentnecessarytoformulateandsolvethedescribedproblems.Inexamplesand
testsusuallythebiomedicalimageshavebeenused.Suchimagesimposehigh
requirementsontothemethodsbecausetheimagedobjectsareirregularandthe
qualityoftheimagesisusuallylimitedinanaturalwaybytheimagingmethods
used.Theaccumulationmethodsareagoodsolutiontothechallengingproblem
odanalysisofsuchimages.
Theconsiderationspresentedinthisbookstartwiththeformulationofthe
accumulationprinciple:
Accumulatetherelevantdatafrompossiblymany,possiblycompetentsources.
Thisprinciple,complementedbytheassumptionthatthequantitativelydominat-
ingresultsofaccumulationaretrue,isknownandwidelyusedinimageprocessing,
mainlyinthemethodsrelatedtotheHT.Theprincipleisinoppositiontothe
tendencytocompresstheimagedataasearlyintheprocessingaspossible.This
