1.1Tebeginnings
In2016(Zlatev,Sonesson&Konderak,2016,p.9),weoptimisticallyannounced:
“CognitivesemioticscanhardlybecharacterizedasanCemerging’disciplineany-
more.Itisalreadyhere.”Lookingatthedisciplinefromaninstitutionalpointof
viewitishardtodenyit:cognitivesemioticianscanjoinanassociation(Interna-
tionalAssociationforCognitiveSemiotics,IACS,founded2013),theycanmeet
duringinternationalconferencesoftheassociation(twoofthemtookplacein2014
inLundandin2016inLublin,thenextonewilltakeplaceinToronto,in2018),
theycanpublishinadedicatedjournal(CognitiveSemioticspublishedbydeGruyter
Mouton).CognitivesemioticsisalsoanestablishedfieldofstudiesattheUniversity
ofAarhus,UniversityofLundaswellasMariaCurie-SkłodowskaUniversityin
LublinandUniversityofBiałystok.Leavingtheaboveinstitutionalcriteriaaside,
Iwishtoanswerthequestion:whatiscognitivesemioticsasascientificdiscipline?
Letusstartwiththeoriginsofthisdiscipline.Historically,cognitivesemiotics
emergedasaresearchprogrambringingtogetherresearchresultsofsemiotics,
linguisticsandcognitivescience(s).Tebasicideabehindtheprogramwastointe-
gratehumanities,socialsciencesandnaturalsciencesintheirefortstodescribe
properlyandexplainthephenomenonofmeaningandmeaning-makingprocesses.
Meaningseemstobe(regardlessitsparticulardefinition)aphenomenonthatis
presentinmultipleareasofstudy.Treedisciplinesareparticularlyinterestedin
thephenomenon:philosophy(especiallyphilosophyoflanguageandmind)with
FregeannotionsofsenseandreferenceorthePutnamianproblemofthemeaningof
meaning(1975),semiotics(withmeaningofsigns)andlinguistics(withsemantics
andpragmaticsoflinguisticunits).Consequently,meaninghasbeenextensively
studiedinthehumanitiesandthesedisciplineshaveprovidedasolidconceptual
basisforatheoryofmeaning.However,meaningisnot(only)anabstractcon-
ceptoridea-humanbeingsintheireverydayfunctioningtreatvariousaspectsof
theirworldasmeaningful:theymakesenseoftheirsurroundings(ininterpreting
variousobjectsandphenomena),theyalsocommunicateaboutthesemeaningful
