hisbooks.Membersofaschoolarealltooinclinedtoregardasindispensable
whatforthemwasofspecialsignificance,andthustoovervaluepersonalcon-
tact,theteacher’sexample,theoraltradition,inaword:everythingtowhich
theschoolgivesrise,everythingitpreservesandpasseson.Thismayexplainin
largepartthefact,whichseemsatrstglancetobeparadoxical,thatintheorbit
oftheschoolpreciselythebooksoftheteacherarenotbelievedtobecapableof
achievingwhatisascribedtothebooksofotherphilosophersprovidedtheyare
greatphilosophersandprovidedtheyaregreatbooks:theabilitytowinover,on
theirownmerits,unknownreadersinanunknownplaceinanunknownfuture,
tochallengethemseriously,toteachthemtoread,tomovethemtothink,and,in
thebestcase,toleadthemtothephilosophicallife.
Theinstitutionoftheschoolplaysanimportantroleinthehistoryofphi-
losophy,andthequarreloverStrausswehavebeenwitnessingsince2003would
notevenexistwithouttheschool.ThusIshallreturntotheschoollater.But
rstIleaveitbehindinordertoanswerwithoutfurtheradothequestionofwhy
IstudyStrauss.Well,forthesamereasonsIstudyotherphilosophers:Toenter
intoadialogueaboutthemostimportantquestionsthatmoveus.Togainclarity
onthefundamentalalternativesofhumanexistence.Toexplorethepossibilities
thatphilosophyholdsinstoreforthinkingthewhole.Tofurthermyknowledge
ofmyself.IdidnotknowStrausspersonally.Iwasneverthestudentofoneof
hisstudents.Iwasnevertoldbyanyonetostudyhiswritings.Ireadhisbooks
asIreadthebooksofRousseauorPlato,NietzscheorLucretius.ThoughIsoon
cametoreadtheseauthorsdifferentlythanIhadreadthembefore.Theconfron-
tationwithStraussgavemeanewaccesstothem.Throughnothingandnoone
haveIlearnedtoreadbetter,moreattentively,morefruitfullythanthroughread-
ingStrauss.
Insayingthat,Ihavealreadyarrivedatmyanswertothequestion"WhyLeo
Strauss?”intheprecisesense.Namely,theanswertothequestionofwhatdistin-
guishesStrauss,whatishisspecialplaceinthehistoryofphilosophy,whatorigi-
nalinsightheholdsinstore,whatistobefoundinhim,orwhatdisclosesitselfto
usmoreeasilyinhimthatotherwisewouldbedifficulttond.Ishallunfoldmy
answerintofouranswers,whichintheendyoumayputtogetherintooneanswer.
Firstanswer:LeoStraussopensupanewhistoricalandadifferentphilo-
sophicalaccesstothehistoryofphilosophy.Thecausethatmorethananything
elsewaslongassociatedwiththenameLeoStrausswastheexoteric-esotericart
ofwriting.Thediscoveryofthewayinwhichphilosopherscommunicateddiffer-
entthingstodifferentaddresseesoftheirwritingsandgavethemdifferentthings
tothinkaboutovermorethantwomillenniaisoffundamentalsignificancefor
theproperunderstandingofthehistoryofphilosophy.Itmakesonefullyaware
ofafactthathadfallenincreasinglyintooblivionaftertheFrenchRevolution,
