Tisstudyexploresthecategoryofthemalenudeand,morespecifically,representationsofthe
nakedmalebodyinPolishartfrom1945tothepresent.Teproblemofthemalenudeserves
asaspringboardforreflectionsonPolishpolitical,culturalandmoralhistory,onthelimitsof
artisticfreedom,andonchangesinmalesubjectivitywithinthecontextofboththepoliticsandthe
aestheticsofgenderandsexuality.Analysesofthemalebodyoferinsightsintothebodypoliticof
Polandtoday.Teauthorarguesthattheparadoxicalstatusofthemalenudeliesinthefactthatit
constitutesasymbolofpowerandofoppositionalike:itisaveryofcialgenreand-atthesame
time-disturbing,obsceneandfrequentlybanned.Terefore,thisbookdiscussesthemalenudein
bothitsgenitalfullnessandprudeconcealment,nationalisthubrisandanarchistprotest,painful
nudityandblissfulsensuality.Consequently,thisstudydealswithtraumaandecstasy,politicsand
eroticism,theofcialandalternativecharacterofthemalenude,examiningthecasesofitinthe
worksofPoland)swomenandmenartists.Tecentralhistoriosophicargumentputforwardin
thestudyisthatthemalenudeinPolishculturehasproblematisedeitherindividualorcollective
freedom,whilethefactthatithasflourishedafer1989canbeassociatedwithpoliticalandsexual
emancipationaswellasthedemocratizationofsexroles.
