Abstract:
Thetimeafter1989isaperiodofgreatchangesnotonlyinPoland,butalso
throughoutEurope.ThecompositionandcharacteroftheactorsontheEuropean
stagehavechanged.Thethreatofanuclearconflicthasdecreased;however,new
threatstoEuropeanstabilityhaveemerged.Atthesametime,thecountriesofthe
formercommunistbloc,includingPoland,feltuncertaintyaboutthedegreeand
durabilityoftheWest’ssupportforthepoliticalandeconomictransformationof
thisregion.Therefore,thebasicdirectionofPolishforeignpolicy,formulated
andimplementedbyMinisterofForeignAffairsSkubiszewski,wasthepursuit
ofrapprochementwithWesterncountriesandtheiralliancesandorganizations,
perceivedasthenucleusofEuropeansecurity.Theconsequencesofthispolicy
wereagreementsestablishingvariousformsofpoliticalandmilitarycooperation
withWesterncountriesandaccessiontoNATO.
