Asanintroductiontotheexercise,elaborateonthefollowingstory
requirements:
Eachstoryhasabeginningandanending;thisiswhatgivesthestory
meaning.Ifastorydoesnothavethesetwoelements,itisoutofcontext,which
meansitismeaningless.Astorywhichhasnobeginningandnoendingislike
aloosering.Thebeginningandtheendingareendswhichattachtoanevent
toachain,whichiscontext.Withoutacontext,ananecdoteorajokeismean-
ingless.Wedon’ttellajoketojustanyoneatjustanymoment.Wetellitto
acertainaudienceatacertainmomentwhichcorrespondstothemomentary
situation,andwhenweanticipatethatitwillreverberate.Withoutthiscontext,
wearejustsomeonewhowantstohearhisownvoice.Thebeginning(intro-
ductionorsetup)putsthestoryintoaspecifccontext.Wetellitnowbecause
itcommentsonwhatwearenowexperiencingorwhatweareinterestedin.
Asfrst,thestudentmustintroducetheprotagonistsandthelocation.
Theintroductionshouldincludeinformationonthebackground(thepre-
conditions)uponwhichtheactionistakingplace.Assimpleasthismight
seem,thestudentusuallyfailstospendenoughtimeandeffortexplain-
ingtotheaudiencewhoarethecharactersbehindthefaceswesee.The
momentweseethecharactersonscreenwe,theaudience,mustquickly
understandwhatistherelationshipbetweenthem.Aretheyloversorroom-
mates?Whatarethecharacters’relationshiptotheirspace?Aretheyat
home,atwork,attheirin-laws?
Thestudentmustbeabletodiscernvitalinformationfromirrelevant
information;theonlybackgroundinformationthatshouldberenderedon
screenistheonewhichisrelevanttothenarrative.Forexample,thecivil
statusoftheprotagonistmattersonlyifthestorydealswithhis/herre-
lationshiptohisspouse,mistressorsignifcantother.If,forexample,we
describetheprotagonistasaAstudent’,weshouldobviouslydealwithhis/
herchallengesatschool;ifheisathief,thenwewillmostlikelyseehim
stealing,etc.Amarriedmancanalsobeastudentand/orathief.Ifso,we
cancompileafewpersonalityaspectstogetherandcreateacomplexchar-
acterbutthatusuallydoesn’thappeninatwominutescene.
